The Higher Colleges of Technology’s (HCT) success with its distance learning program has been repeated in its summer semester courses, with over 15,600 students enrolling in 342 courses for HCT’s online Summer Semester 1, from May 27 to June 30, 2020.
The continuing appeal of HCT’s distance learning program, which started in early March 2020, is evident as the Summer Semester 1 saw a 20% increase in student enrollments, compared to the previous year.
Dr. Abdullatif AlShamsi, HCT President & CEO, said the whole HCT community took great pride in the achievements made in all sectors, as HCT successfully addressed challenges borne from the COVID-19 pandemic, thus ensuring a gradual return to normal life where students were able to pursue uninterrupted studies this academic year.
Dr. AlShamsi congratulated all HCT students across the 16 campuses for completing their academic year and final examinations with great commitment to achieve their best possible results. He further praised students for their high levels of interaction with online distance learning in the areas of academic studies, extracurricular activities and digital student life.
He noted that 15,603 HCT students are now pursuing their summer semester 1 studies, compared 12,966 students in the previous year. “This reflects strong student interaction with HCT’s distance learning system, which encourages a large number of students to take summer courses and invest their time wisely in improving their academic performance,” he said.
He added that the online distance learning program enables students to register in any offered summer courses regardless of their “home” campus. “More than half of the 1,196 online classes had students from many HCT campuses. Further, 230 classes, or 19%, were co-educational, allowing both male and female students to study the same courses, remotely,” Dr AlShamsi said.
HCT will offer two summer semesters this academic year, in order to help students complete their academic and work placement requirements after the interruptions to their schedules caused by the current pandemic. The return to work at campuses, and recommencing normality for campuses, will enable students to complete their compulsory work placement requirement and graduate on time, Dr. AlSHamsi noted.
HCT’s online Summer Semester 2 will run from July 5 to August 22, 2020 and will primarily assist students to complete their work placement requirements prior to graduation.
