SJW Student Joins GARD Presentation Coaching Team

2 weeks

Every semester HCT’s General Academic Requirements Division (GARD) faculty members are busy helping young innovators and entrepreneurs to perfect their innovative project pitches at HCT initiatives, such as the Innovation Challenge and Ibtikar events, organized by the HCT Faculty of Business.

This year, the GARD team has been graced by its first student coach, Ms. Hessa Humaid Al Darmaki, who is a former competitor in the Innovation Challenge.

Hessa drew on her Innovation Challenge experience and considerable presentation skills to co-facilitate a workshop, which was designed to brief Innovation Challengers on some of the best ways to pitch their ideas.

The presentation coaching enables students to properly communicate their ideas and connect with large audiences by working on elements, such as effective slides, confidence and stagecraft.   Effective speaking and listening skills are crucial to success in the 21stcentury and a key part of the Ministry of Higher Education and Advanced Skills portfolio in the UAE.  Strong communication skills empower young Emiratis with confidence and strengthen both inter-personal and intra-personal competencies, which are indispensable skills in the modern workplace.

Hessa Humaid Al Darmaki is a business student at the HCT-Sharjah Women’s campus (SJW), inspired students to tell their stories and market their ideas in a high-pressure environment. The students who attended the workshop said that Hessa’s experience was invaluable to their success. The team is looking forward to more workshops with Hessa and recruiting more student coaches.

“It was a wonderful experience to help the people that I could relate to.  I can’t wait to do it again,” Hessa said.

Presentation coaching from GARD takes place every semester for the Innovation Challenge and for the annual Ibtikar system-wide competition.  An SJW Presentation Coach also coaches students across Sharjah University City and the UAE at the International Forum on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, in conjunction with Sharjah University and Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
