The General Studies & Business Faculties at the HCT-Sharjah Women’s campus (SJW) joined forces to take a group of 16 lucky students on a field trip to the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, on May 1, based at Dubai’s JBR.
The students, accompanied by faculty organizers Kristel O’Sullivan (General Studies) and Sergiy Spivakovskyy (Business), were first invited to enjoy a spectacular view from the Consul General’s office that overlooks the Palm Jumeirah and the Dubai Eye, two projects that were developed by Dutch dredging company Van Oord.
They then listened to a presentation by the Deputy Consul General, Ms. Ester van Someren, and the Head of Economic Affairs, Mr. Jeroen Schillings, on the role of the Consulate in improving trade relations between the UAE and the Netherlands.
The second presentation was by Ms. Reema al Yemni, a Saudi national who works as a brand strategist for the Dutch brand consultancy, Skyne, based in Dubai Design District. Ms. Reema spoke about the differences in targeting Arab audiences, versus Europeans when marketing a product. She also discussed her personal experiences working in an international business environment.
The presentations were informal and followed by a Q&A during which students asked many pertinent questions and even used the opportunity to discuss future work placement opportunities within UAE’s diverse private sector.
“It was inspirational and a very motivating experience”, said Mariam Al Shimmari, one of the participating Business students.
The presenters were likewise impressed by the students and have offered to host more HCT students in the future with a visit to Dutch electronics giant Philips and Van Oord on the horizon.
