Aeronautical Engineering and Technology (AET) students from the HCT-Al Ain Women’s campus (AAW) showcased their technical and creative skills when they won 1st place in the bi-annual Design Thinking Competition, held at the HCT-Ras Al Khaimah campuses on May 7, 2018.
The competition involved around 450 students from all HCT campuses, making up the 31 participating teams in the competition, which was held under the theme of “Design, Build, Fly” for applications of Design Thinking in Aerospace Engineering. The aim was to design, build and fly their own innovative unmanned, engine-less, flying vehicles.
The AAW team, “UAE-47”, ranked in top place in the competition with a flight distance of 13.35 m and a total score of 74.66, after a round of launching devices, presentations, judging measurements, and an open voting session.
A mere four points behind, a team from the HCT-Fujairah Women’s campus came second, with a total score of 70.78, while the Abu Dhabi Women’s team came in third place, scoring 65.77 points.
The AAW’s UAE-47 team designed and constructed their fixed-wing aerial vehicle from ultra-light weight foam bringing the total weight of the 84 cm wingspan glider to less than 55 grams. The glider was launched by means of the catapult using compressed springs for the power source.
