Four Aeronautical Engineering Technology students from the HCT-Al Ain Women’s campus (AAW) were the pride of the college when they presented their combined graduation project from February 1-7, 2018, as part of the Al Ain Municipality’s activities for the UAE’s nation-wide Month of Innovation.
The students’ project demonstrates controlling traffic light signals using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). It aims to facilitate a smooth flow of traffic in case of emergencies, accidents, congestion or special events/marches.
The innovative system was designed by students Mariam Al Nuaimi, Meera Al Neyadi, Shamma Othman and Mouza Al Dhaheri, under the supervision of the engineering faculty member, Mr. Mohamad Muflehi.
The students confidently and competently explained to visitors that In the event of a traffic accident or congestion, a UAV is dispatched to the required coordinates by the operator sending a text message to the UAV. That message is processed and forwarded wirelessly, by infrared light, to the traffic lights to perform the required traffic management action.
During the Al Ain Municipality event, the students demonstrated the operation of the system to the exhibition visitors using a 3D-printed prototype of a 4-way intersection, with traffic lights, and answered all related questions from the many interested visitors.
