The HCT-Sharjah Women’s campus (SJW) Library hosted a number of interactive creativity workshops to help support “HCT Sharjah Innovates” from November 19-23.
The workshops encouraged students communicate their ideas visually in under an hour. Students were tasked to produce mock-ups and turn their ideas into tangible artifacts for further development.
Twenty-nine students participated in the workshops where students were divided into small groups of 5-6 and applied the first four steps of the design thinking methodology – Empathize, Define, Ideate and Prototype (or mock-up). Some students came just to produce mock-ups as they had been working on product concepts in their courses.
All students were able to produce mock-ups of their ideas and exhibited their talents by displaying the completed projects. One student, Khulood Khalil, said that she enjoyed brainstorming and creating ideas for making traditional board games. She had lots of fun and felt her stress relieved.
Participating students used a variety of simple materials and hands-on experimentation to bring their ideas to life. They created different projects such as lighthouse with clay, chain of infections, security alarm for farms, UAE model contrasting 1971 with 2020, and traditional board games.
SJW student Marwah Al Zarooni mentioned that her group “had so much fun, making their mock-ups”. The other student group, consisting of Fatma Rashid, Amna Salem, and Shaikha Ali, said that “the workshop was interesting, as they could put their ideas into creative forms and demonstrate a security alarm for farms.”
The judging panel consisted of Ali Farhat, CIS Lecturer, and Anamika Misra, General Studies Lecturer, who evaluated the students’ projects and selected the following winning teams:
