Students from the HCT-Ras Al Khaimah Women’s campus (RKW) showed their passions for outer space when they participated in the 2nd cycle of the Explore Mars Poster Competition, convened under the patronage of the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Center, on October 21, 2017.
The Explore Mars Competition had two tracks – Explore Mars Science and Explore Mars Missions – in which the two RKW teams, each consisting of two students, eagerly competed with great results.
Team 1 from RKW, known as Valles Marineris, took on the Explore Mars Science challenge to Explore Mars’ Geology, Climate and Atmosphere. Students Afra and Noora proposed developing a Low Altitude Imaging System (LAIS) with the main objective to collect spectroscopic imaging at 3 cm resolution or better, exceeding current image resolution attained from orbit.
The students were thrilled when they were announced as second place winner, receiving a prize of AED 5,000.
The RKW Team 2, known as Mars Flyer, undertook the Explore Mars Mission using an innovative spacecraft subsystem design for Mars Explorations).
Students Khadija and Safeyya proposed developing a Martian Autonomous Unmanned Arial Vehicle (AUAV) with main objective to fly the Martian atmosphere providing sufficient and necessary regional coverage that is not conceivable with a rover. The Mars Flyer concept was selected as one of the finalists.
Both teams were supervised and accompanied by Asad Hindash and RAK Campuses Director Dr. Saif Almheiri .
In addition, twelve visiting students from RKW joined this event including Sumayya Al Rasbi, Officer- Student Life.
