Fujairah Faculty Snaps His Way to 2nd Place in Prestigious National Geographic Photography Competition

Yulius Yulius, Applied Media faculty at the HCT-Fujairah campuses, prefers to let his work do the talking for him.

Mr Yulius’s approach has paid off handsomely when he was awarded 2nd place in the People Category of the internationally renowned National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year 2017 competition, for his work “Interesting Moment”.

The annual competition garnered over 15,000 entries from photographers living and working in more than 30 countries.

Yulius’s photograph perfectly captures a nicely ironic juxtaposition between the museum visitors and the figures in the painting, which are captivating the audience. In a case of art imitating life, Yulius’s image shows both sets of people watching the other.

The competition’s judging panel was made up of Molly Roberts, National Geographic senior photography editor; Benjamin Lowry, adventure and underwater photographer; and Jody MacDonald, adventure and sports documentary photographer. Molly Roberts commented on this year’s winning pictures: “You’re looking for something that’s exceedingly well crafted and something that’s visually strong, surprising. An unexpected moment.”

This semester Yulius will be leading a photography club at Fujairah Women campus and will pass on the spirit of making well-crafted photography to the students.
