HCT Madinat Zayed and Ruwais campuses kicked off their Employer on Campus initiatives by hosting the Shams Power Company on September 25 & 26.
Shams Solar Power Station is a concentrating solar power station near Madinat Zayed, located approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Abu Dhabi. The power station, which is six kilometers from Madinat Zayed on the road from Tarif to the Liwa Oasis, became operational on 17 March 2013.
The initial phase of the power plant, Shams 1, uses parabolic trough technology and has a capacity of 100 megawatts (MW), which makes it among the largest parabolic trough power stations in the world. Shams 1 was commissioned in early 2013 and will be followed by the Shams 2 and Shams 3 stations.
The Employer on Campus day started with a brief from Mrs. Eman Al Tamimi and Eng. Mariam Al Hammadi about Shams 1’s mission, vision, history and operations.
Mariam Al Hammadi, who is an alumni from Ruwais Women’s campus (RWW) then introduced her experience with Shams; from the time she was an intern in Shams1, until she graduated and applied for a full time job as a chemical engineer.
Mrs. Haya Hashim, from Shams Human Resources Department, then introduced the available job opportunities, as well as short and long internship opportunities. Interested alumni and Year-4 students, from the Business and Engineering disciplines, submitted their CVs for the available hiring positions. At the same time, Year-3 students applied for internship opportunities.
First-year and Foundations students were also given a brief on the different departments of Shams, and were introduced to the majors needed for employment in the company. It was a chance for students to explore the different positions available which will help them in their future programme major selections.
The Shams team, consisting of Mr. Musab Al Darmaki, HR Manager, Mrs. Haya Hashim, Senior HR Officer, Mr. Mohamed Al Hammadi, Procurement Manager, and Eng. Rashed Al Shamsi, Inspection Engineer, conducted interviews for alumni and Year-4 students who had applied for positions at Shams. The interviews went very well, with both Shams officials and students very impressed with the high level of planning and arrangement of the event.
The success of the events marked the start of many more successful Employer on Campus events in the HCT Al Dhafra campuses. The positive atmosphere from the Employer on Campus events continued with students showing great enthusiasm for the opportunity to learn about job opportunities and to showcase their skills; having explored the opportunities in one of the most ambitious companies in the region.
The Shams team responses to the events was extremely positive, with them being very impressed with the level of skills and education of the HCT alumni and students.
