On April 12, the HCT Social Work Division celebrated World Social Work Day with a well-attended and highly interactive Social Work conference at the HCT-Abu Dhabi Women’s campus (ADW).
The day is an annual opportunity to highlight what social work is, what social workers do and to celebrate social work’s contribution to societies. The program was well attended by professionals from community social services, HCT Social Work faculty and students from ADW and Sharjah Women’s campus (SJW), government and private high schools. It was the Fourth World Social Work Day Conference sponsored by the HCT Social Work department.
This year’s theme was “Community Sustainability: Caring for Our Community” and highlights of this year’s event included the Keynote speaker, Miss Alham Lamki, Director of Research at Abu Dhabi General Women’s Union. Miss Lamki gave an inspiring speech that outlined how her agency contributes to UAE community sustainability and her department’s active role in the empowerment of UAE women.
Semester-6 Social Work students from ADW facilitated the event and provided multiple activities and presentations on child abuse and UAE Child Abuse legislation. Additional highlights included:
- Creating and presenting a children’s book and skit about child abuse and child protection
- ADW Semester-5 student presentations highlighting thoughts from community social workers
- SJW Semester-7 student community projects on white wall and child abuse
The day ended with recognition of student contributions and awards.
