The Al Ain Men’s campus (AAM) Levels 3 & 4 Foundations students expanded their knowledge by visiting the world’s biggest date factory – the Al Foah date factory.
During the visit the students had an opportunity to investigate, observe and ask questions about an important and significant industry here in the UAE.
During and after the visit the students worked on experiential learning activities that linked to their Math and English Foundation courses. For Math, students had a variety of tasks involving calculations based on the date sorting, weighing and packing process.
As Level 4 students are taking the IELTS test the tasks were based on describing a process. The students also encouraged took photographs to consolidate their notes.
However, the trip was not only academic. For many, it was probably their first experience of visiting a large industrial plant, seeing people at work and having the realization of how much work goes into something we eat often in our daily lives. The processing plant also utilized up to date technology and the most modern processing methods.
Overall, it was an interesting field trip and students enjoy the informative tour. A lot of photographs were taken and dates eaten! Students will appreciate dates a lot more now having seen the incredible process involved.
Dr. Yahya Al Ansaari, AAM Director, said: “Students and faculties are encouraged to visit different companies to be exposed to an environment outside and learn how different companies in the industry functioning.”
