DBW Students Channel the Spirit of Giving

Applied Media students at the HCT-Dubai Women’s campus (DBW) took the liberty to engage with the Year of Giving Retreat by live tweeting their propositions for the Year of Giving initiative through the hashtag #الخير_فيكم_كليات_التقنية.

The Giving Retreat was part of the Year of Giving initiative as ministers and officials gathered to come up with a national strategy that goes along with the objectives of the Year of Giving.

Brainstorming sessions were held all day at the DBW campus where 43 Applied Media students proposed their ideas contributing to the Year of Giving initiative through Twitter. Other DBW students participated in the initiative prior to the retreat. Students articulated their suggestions based on the six pillars of the initiative. These pillars include corporate social responsibility, developing a legislative system to achieve objectives, growth of the development sector and humanitarian organizations, the role of the media, serving the nation, and volunteering.

The activity was particularly relevant to Applied Media students who take a social media course as they were able to integrate their learning with current events.

Some of the students’ suggestions include having educational institutes introduce teaching sign language to all students, making volunteer work part of the curriculum from elementary school through high school, and developing animated series that showcase the efforts and accomplishments of the Year of Giving initiative, as means to instill the spirit of giving in children.

“Our role as educators and administrators in higher education is to make sure we are equipping our students with the necessary skills that guarantee their valuable contribution to themselves as individuals and their communities. The brainstorming sessions connected our students to an extremely important initiative that will only succeed by engaging all community members in its efforts.  The students were challenged to think of sustainable giving and how to instill this thinking in their daily lives,” noted Dr. Tarifa Ajaif, DBW Director.

The Year of Giving is a philanthropic initiative set for 2017 solely dedicated to giving back to the community, as well as the rest of the world. This initiative was launched by the president of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed to commemorate his father and how philanthropy was always at the core of his values, to promote a culture of giving back to the community, and to enhance the spirit of volunteering and loyalty to the country. The initiative also launched in hopes of turning the community into sustainable rather than occasional givers.
