A collection of stories based on Emirati oral history, accompanied by student-created artwork, from HCT-Abu Dhabi Women’s campus (ADW) students, has been proudly showcased to educators at the TESOL Arabia conference on March 9, 2017.
ADW’s Dr. Ewa Gajer, from the General Studies Division, and Kevin Trinh, from the Applied Communications Division, presented the student-created publication Stories of Sand and Change at the international conference, providing details of how the collaboration was achieved.
The project started as Dr. Ewa’s oral history assignment for Intercultural Studies students, in the General Studies programme, three years ago where each student approached an elderly person from her community and asked for a story of an event that shaped or changed the person’s life.
The stories were then shared with the students in Kevin Trinh’s Drawing class who were asked to capture the essence of the selected stories in art form.
The stories and illustrations were then shortlisted and selected for publication in the impressive finished product – a coffee table book entitled Stories of Sand and Change.
