shjSEEN, an initiative by the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, recently offered HCT-Dubai Women’s campus (DBW) students a session on building a professional identity on LinkedIn to assist them with their search for employment as they graduate.

LinkedIn is a highly popular way to network with professionals in various industry sectors and more employers are using LinkedIn as a recruitment and hiring tool. Now, students are also using it as part of their job searches.

Marcus Butler, LinkedIn Territory Manager, explained to a gathering of over 250 DBW students from all academic programmes why it is important for students to start a professional network on LinkedIn. He encouraged students to use the professional social media platform that will impact individual careers, as well as businesses.

“Students should focus on building their own profiles to ensure success. Over two billion searches were conducted on LinkedIn in 2016, the more you complete your profile, the higher you will appear in the search results of potential employers,” he said.

DBW Career Advisor, Dina Abuljebain, said: “It is important for our students to understand the need for a LinkedIn profile as it is no longer enough to just have a CV. Students must create a professional online presence.”

“LinkedIn, as the world’s largest professional network can help our students achieve the following: Build their own personal and professional brand & showcase their experience and areas of expertise, turn relationships into opportunities as they get a chance to get connected to various employers and help them get more insights in terms of preparing for various interviews and get chance to be updated with the latest trends happening in their desired field,” she added.

The session was concluded by giving students helpful tips on LinkedIn etiquette including the following helpful tips and pointers:

  • Share insights and updates with your network
  • Draw from the experiences of your peers
  • Stay up to speed with companies you are interested in
  • Stay connected with your professional contacts and
