Students, faculty and staff at the HCT-Al Ain Men’s campus (AAM) joined the worldwide celebration of the Arabic language when they participated in International Mother Language Day.
The participant excitedly took up the opportunity to know more about Arabic calligraphy types and the most famous calligraphers in the Arab world, as they converged on the campus’s Calligraphy Gallery Corner for hands-on displays.
All participants got the chance to have their names and their relatives’ names written with Arabic fonts, which won the attention and admiration of faculty members as they saw the beauty and elegance of the Arabic writing. Some were even lucky enough to receive giveaways during the event.
Dr Yahya Al Ansaari, AAM Director, said: “The Arabic language is our mother language and it is very important for the coming generation to honour it.”
UNESCO supports mother language and multilingual education through its annual International Mother Language Day (IMLD) and celebrated IMLD 2017 with the theme of “Towards Sustainable Futures through Multilingual Education.”
The IMLD also supports Goal 4.6 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which is to “Ensure that all youth and a substantial proportion of adults, both men and women, achieve literacy and numeracy by 2030”.
