3 years

High school students, their parents and residents flocked to the HCT-Madinat Zayed and Ruwais Colleges on November 13 and 15 for a watershed event on the Western Region calendar – the campuses’ annual Al Gharbia Careers Fair.

Hundreds of final-year high school students joined HCT students for their fair for a valuable opportunity to interact with HR representatives from a range of companies.

The main objective of the Careers Fair was to create awareness of job opportunities and the companies hiring in the Western Region, and introduce the employers to HCT students and the Al Gharbia community. Leading companies in the UAE featured included Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), Etihad Rail, Shuweihat Asia Power Company, Ruwais Power Company, Scipco Power International Power Company, ADWEA, SEHA Al Gharbia Hospitals, Family Development Foundation, Baynounah Institute and the Petroleum Institute.

The event kicked off with opening ceremonies at both the campuses, with guests of honour at the Madinat Zayed Colleges being Dewan representatives Mr. Ibrahim Al Marar, Director of Government Co-ordination Office, and Mr. Amar Al Mansoori, Executive Director of Citizen Affairs. At the Ruwais Colleges, the guest of honour was Mr. Mubarak Obaid AlMansouri, the head of ADNOC housing in Ruwais.

ENEC held a talk during both the days for all HCT students and local schools to introduce the company and the opportunities available at the organization, as well as to discuss the UAE’s peaceful nuclear energy program.

HR Manager Mr. Logo Mudaliar, HR manager at SAPCO, said: ‘’The Al Gharbia Careers Fair has proved to be beneficial for our company as we were looking for qualified UAE nationals to be appointed at various positions in our Power plant located in Ruwais. We have collected a number of qualified CVs from the enthusiastic UAE nationals and we will be looking at each CV and positively recruit them in our company.’’

Dr.Hashim Alzaabi, Director of the HCT-Western Region Colleges, said: ‘’ It is important to organize Careers Fair at HCT as they enable our students to meet potential employers and get employed. The Careers Fair which was targeted to hire Emiratis in the Western Region supported the combined vision of government agencies to increase Emiratization in the region.’’

Aizah Obaid, HCT Western Region Alumni & Graduate Employment Senior Officer, thanked the companies for attending the Careers Fair. ‘’Events like these enable our students to get introduced to different opportunities in the region. First-hand interaction with employers is necessary as students can ask a range of questions directly and this sparks their interest in companies. The Western Region is a great place to work,” she said.

The Careers Fair was also taken as an opportunity to introduce the HCT colleges in the Western Region to High school students from different schools in the area. This included schools like Abbas School, Al Shumook School, STS, Al Muttahlda School, Ibtikar School Gayati and Gayati Home School.

These high school students were taken on a tour of the HCT campuses and they were then invited for a classroom and Lab experience. HCT faculty demonstrated how classes are conducted at the colleges, as well as how technology and hands-on learning are integrated into laboratories and classrooms. Students were excited and interested and expressed their desire to pursue further studies at innovative colleges in the UAE, such as the HCT campuses.

As part of the Careers Fair, the Engineering department showcased prototype cars designed by the Mechanical and Electrical engineering students. The cars competed in the 2015 Shell Eco-marathon in Manila, the Philippines. They are designed to consume as little fuel as possible, yet cover long distances. They were one example of the many skills and talents HCT students possess and how they convert their course knowledge to practice.

HCT-Madinat Zayed Colleges Student Council president, Aysha Ali Al Hamadi, said ‘’The Careers Fair was very useful and all the students got many benefits from it. Students got to know about volunteering opportunities and scholarships that companies offer. Moreover, graduates of HCT got the chance to give their CVs to the companies. It was a very important event and we should conduct it every year.’’

The Western Region is over two thirds of the Abu Dhabi Emirate and is a huge hub for Oil & Gas and power companies. Residents from across the UAE choose to relocate to the Al Gharbia to work for leading UAE companies based in the region.
