With 2016 declared the Year of Reading by UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the HCT-Sharjah Colleges’ Libraries launched a pilot of the popular M-Reader programme aimed at the colleges’ Cycle 1 Foundations students.
Foundations students at all levels have been competing to read the most books on M-Reader, an international, extensive reading programme that allows students to read a wide range of materials at their individual level of English.
Students at both campuses were presented with awards for their efforts, with certificates presented to students who attained top reading achievements in each Foundations level and section.
In addition, three Sharjah College students received special recognition for placing on the M-Reader global “top readers” scoreboard. They were Majid Mohamed Al Zarooni (SMC), who ranked number 3, Abdelrahman Hassan Alhammadi (SMC), who ranked number 6, and Marwa Ibrahim Ali Alghazal (SWC), who placed number 10.
The Sharjah Colleges gave warm congratulations to all students who received the certificates and awards.
“I read stories every day to develop my English language, and I advise people to read stories every day to help them learn English faster,” Majid Mohamed Al Zarooni explained.
“I believe reading stories will impact me positively in my future career path,” he added.
SMC student Abdelrahman Hassan Alhammadi, said: “M-Reader taught me how to read and how to find quiz answers in the text. Thanks for everyone responsible for M-Reader.”
The M-Reader initiative has been led by Mr. Dennis Samaniego, SMC Library Technician, and Ms. Carmelina Monteiro, SWC Library Assistant, with support from the entire Library team and keen participation from Foundations faculty members.
Following the great success of the pilot in Cycle 1, students are already participating in M-Reader for Cycle 2, when they will continue to have the opportunity to experience the pleasure of reading in their library and the fun of competing with students from around the world.
Congratulations to all of the M-Reader programme readers!
