The enterprising and creative HCT-Al Ain Women’s College (AAWC) Bachelor of Education students displayed their hands-on approach to education when they welcomed 30 students from Al Zaydeah Kindergarten to the college’s Literacy Day on October 5.
The AAWC students developed a variety of experiential, engaging phonics and letter-knowledge activities for the KG2 students to explore. The children enjoyed four corners of activities, each representing a theme – the story-telling corner; the jungle corner; water world corner; and the monkey and me corner.
The event resulted from a class learning project where the Education students planned and implemented literacy center activities to promote emergent literacy skills among the pupils, such as concepts about print (front cover, title, one-to-one correspondence when reading, and directionality); phonemic awareness (identifying what letter sounds a child hears); letter knowledge and phonics (associating the letter sound with the letter and letter formation).
The day was a resounding success as the Al Zaydeah children were quickly drawn to the activities. They thoroughly enjoyed exploring all four corners, where they identified letter sounds, segmented and blended words together and counted the number of syllables heard in words.
For their part the Education students were able to demonstrate a high level of professionalism and created a desirable atmosphere by choosing themes and decorations to attract the young learners. They clearly communicated with the children to ensure that all content was delivered in an enjoyable and engaging fashion.
At the end of the event, the AAWC students distributed gifts to their young charges, as well as the ever-popular face painting. A fun, educational day was had by all.
