The HCT–Fujairah Colleges successfully hosted a four-day Health and Wellness Week at both campuses from November 25-28.
The week was launched by the College Acting Director Mr. Brian Keenan and other prominent members of the community including Mr. Mohamed Saif Al Afkham, Director of Fujairah Municipality; Dr. Mohamed Abdullah Bin Saeed, Director of Fujairah Medical District; Dr. Aisha Suhail, Deputy Director of Fujairah Primary Health Services and Lieutenant Ahmad Al Hashemi, Manager Fujairah Community Police.
Highlights of the week included a Speakers Circuit on topics including diabetes and breast cancer prevention; the dangers of smoking; the importance of proper nutrition; pre and postnatal care; anger management; and mind-mapping strengths.
The presenters were Dr. Fatma Abdulla Al Melaih, Dr. Mona Al Yammahi, Dr. Huda Al Abdouli, Dr. Basema Jaber, Hanan Khatib, Sheikhah Ahmed Al Khadeem, Dr. Abeer Abdo, Sara Ibrahim Hamid Sanba, and Marie-Ann Glavin. Speaker were provided by Fujairah Medical District, Fujairah Primary Health Care, Al Sharq Hospital and HCT Student Services.
A Health Trail allowed students to learn some of their vital health indicators such as weight, BMI, blood pressure, and blood sugar. Students were able to win small prizes for participating in exercises or in correctly answering questions.
Student participation for the week was highlighted by Abdulla Yousif Murad Abdalla, from FMC, who on his own initiative, decided to run from Khorfakkan to Fujairah (30km) to promote anti-smoking. Abdullah successfully completed the run in 2½ hours and then returned to class.
A healthy snack was provided daily at both campuses by Carrefour, Hilton Fujairah Resort, Coral Suites Hotel, le Meridien Al Aqah Beach Resort and Radisson Blue Fujairah Resorts. In the cafeteria, Abela provided a healthy lunch daily at a discounted price.
