Students enrolled in a Drama Appreciation class at the Higher Colleges of Technology’s Abu Dhabi Women’s College had the privilege recently of attending an educational workshop with a visiting expert from Shakespeare’s Globe in London, UK.
The Abu Dhabi Festival Education Programme sponsored the session with Yolanda Vasquez, a respected actress and Globe Education Practitioner, who discussed various situations in William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Students then attended a live performance of the play, part of the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation’s Abu Dhabi Festival.
The HCT’s new Liberal Studies curriculum includes Drama Appreciation, and these students, who are majoring in areas such as business and electronics engineering technology, had prepared for the workshop by studying A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
During the workshop, Ms. Vasquez showed students how to think about characters, motivation, and key plot elements. A few students volunteered to portray roles from the play in brief exercises.
“It was a golden opportunity to meet an expert such as Ms. Yolanda. She motivated each student to try their best. Drama is not only acting, as many people think,” an ADWC student Nouf said.
When contrasting reading the play with watching a professional performance, Nouf added: “It is not enough to read the play. I really enjoyed watching it. When every scene came on, I understood the play very clearly, and I didn’t feel bored. It was exciting!”
Dr. Jace Hargis, Director of the HCT’s ADWC, stated: “Our colleges have benefited greatly from the Abu Dhabi Festival’s Education Programme. This group of Liberal Studies students not only interacted with Ms. Vasquez, a world-class Shakespearean actress and drama educator, but they also had the unforgettable experience of watching a live performance of a play they had studied beforehand. We are sincerely grateful to Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation and its sponsors and patrons, who have made the Education Programme possible.”
