Last week, Sean James from Fujairah Men’s College and his team of three students, consisting of Captain Ibrahim Mohamed and Lieutenants Abdalla Abdalla and Saeed Kaseb, spent two days at the HCT Madinat Zayed campus where they took part in the annual Cycling Tour De Al Gharbia.
The Team Fujairah members packed their cycling kits and drove over 1000km to the dunes of Liwa, in the Western Region of the UAE. Over 200 competitors, including staff and students from schools and colleges across the UAE attend the unique event each year.
Arriving early on the Wednesday, Team Fujairah set about testing and adjusting the bikes they had been allocated. A training ride around the town of Al Mirfa established tactics and the most effective way to ride; stretching their legs after the long drive.
The day of the race was hot and the route direction, from north to south, meant Team Fujairah would be heading directly into a fierce prevailing wind for the entire 50km. The course tracked straight through the desert towards Madinat Zayed over undulating terrain.
Water and mechanical assistance were available at special points and determination was needed to complete the course.
Team Fujairah was unyielding in their desire to finish this marathon of a race, and two hours later they crossed the finish line. Elated and showing no signs of fatigue, despite displaying the marks of having crashed a number of times, they were satisfied.
Individual places in the top 10 students for Abdulla and Ibrahim and 2nd overall for Sean James were worthy recognition of their endeavours.
Within HCT-Fujairah there exists a community feeling that is unique in the region. This feeling of unity can only be enhanced by participation in extra- curricular activities such as the Tour De Al Gharbia that bring staff, students and families together.
Team Fujairah was awarded the coveted prize for Team Spirit – given to the team that displays not only the most effort, tenacity and commitment throughout the Tour but also for the team that shows a willingness to help less experienced competitors always with a smile and friendly words of advice.
