ADWC students learn theatre from Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey

7 years

Ten ADWC students enrolled in “Drama Appreciation” as part of the HCT’s new Liberal Studies curriculum were recently invited to participate in a workshop with world-renowned actor and director Kevin Spacey.

The workshop, organized by Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Festival (ADMAF) and the Middle East Theatre Academy (META), brought together about 30 female university students from around the UAE to discuss the performing arts in the Arab world.

The group also did exercises in movement, improvisation, and performance under the direction of Spacey and actor Nathan Darrow. Darrow appears with Spacey in the worldwide touring production of Richard III.

Spacey stars as the title character in Richard III, and workshop participants were expected to be familiar with the complex Shakespeare play based on English history. Spacey and Darrow led exercises and had student volunteers perform various activities during the three-hour class, but perhaps of most interest to participants was watching the well-known actor practice his craft.

ADWC student Haya commented, “We really liked the performances Kevin did during the workshop, especially when a student asked him to do his part from Richard III. It was like we were inside the story, as if it were real.”

“It was amazing,” student Zobida added.

Dr. Jace Hargis, ADWC’s Director, stated: “On behalf of the HCT’s Abu Dhabi Women’s College, I offer my thanks to ADMAF, META, Mr. Spacey and Mr. Darrow. Our students had an unforgettable learning experience.”
