Jubilant Students from Madinat Zayed and Ruwais Colleges, the newest colleges in the HCT system, made history last Thursday by winning their first gold cup at HCT Olympics Day at Dubai Men’s College in the football competition.
They made their teachers and managers very proud. ‘This is marvelous news’ said Director Phil Quirke, Director of the colleges, ‘We know how wonderful our students are and it is good to see them succeed in such an important event. It’s like Crystal Palace winning the FA Cup.’
It took time to build a team, time and hard work, but on the day it all came together.
Their first win was against Al Ain Men’s College, it was so encouraging to have one win under their belts, but then they went on to beat Abu Dhabi Men’s College and that really gave them hope that they could succeed.
They lost by one goal to Ras Al Khaimah, but they had done well enough to qualify for the semi final where they beat Dubai Men’s college 2-1 and then in a tense final, they beat Sharjah Men’s College by one goal.
They had hoped to acquit themselves with honour, winning the cup was an extra bonus they hardly dared to hope for.
It is a long journey from Al Gharbia to Dubai. The team started early, but it was fun to travel together.
Madinat Zayed Men’s College is 160km from Ruwais Men’s College and it was good to have the opportunity to get together. They were keen to promote the abilities of the Region and show that they might be the youngest, smallest college in the federation, but they were well on their way to being champions.
They have certainly put Madinat Zayed and Ruwais Colleges on the sporting map now. The star team has dedicated the cup to all MZC & RUC faculty and staff for making such a difference in their community.
