The Sharjah Higher Colleges of Technology signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Sharjah Education Zone for the delivery of a teacher professional program on IELTS teaching pedagogies.
The scope of the PD program is two-fold. First is the delivery of PD workshops to a group of 45 3rd Cycle high school teachers (Years 10-12). Over the course of three months (February-April, 2011), the teachers will attend twenty hours of workshops on the content and the format of the tasks in each of the modules of the IELTS (Academic) exam.
The SHCT workshop trainers will model best practice classroom pedagogies and will involve participants in teaching materials design and preparation.
The second part of the program is the compilation of teaching resources for preparing high school students for the IELTS exam. The resources will be compiled at SHCT and will cover a total of over 220 classroom hours over Years 10, 11 and 12.
The Sharjah Education Zone will then use these resources during a two-hour period each week to familiarize high school students with the format of the IELTS exam and enhance their knowledge of Academic English.
The PD program will be coordinated by the UNESCO Chair program and the Centre for Teaching and Learning at SHCT.
Dr. Christina Gitsaki, UNESCO Chair at SHCT, said: ‘This is a pilot program and we hope to expand it next academic year to the rest of the 3rd Cycle high school teachers in the Sharjah Education Zone.
“Introducing IELTS training at high school is a step in the right direction given the educational reforms currently sweeping the country and the need for high school students to achieve an IELTS 5 or more for entry into undergraduate study programs.’
