Seventeen students of the Ras Al Khaimah Men’s College represented the HCT in the Abu Dhabi 40-foot Traditional Rowing Boat Race on November 6.
RKMC competed in Race 2 of the event gaining 11th place in a field of 15 boats. The racing event was the first of three that are to be hosted by the Emirates Heritage Club on the Abu Dhabi Corniche throughout the season. Sixty boats take part and race against each other in four separate races.
RKMC have been racing competitively at a national level in the 30′ traditional boat category hosted by the Dubai International Marine Club since 2005.
However, the 6 November race was the first time they had participated in the 40′ category. RKMC competed in the five 30′ and three 40′ national level races. The College’s season will culminate in the annual HCT Boat race between the seven Men’s colleges on April 7, 2011.
Traditional rowing is a fascinating and physically tough sport. The RKMC students train three times a week on Khor Ras Al Khaimah.
RKMC sees that the sport provides opportunities to develop important characteristics of commitment, team work, leadership, responsibility, strength and fitness.
