The teams were well matched
What better way to comemorate the end of a successful year of hard work, than with a football match.
Soldiers from the Nuclear power station in Baraka, Al Gharbia, challenged HCT/CERT Ruwais male students to a friendly match to end a year of English classes, sponsored by CNIA in conjunction with ENEC.
CNIA undertakes security for the petrochemical industries and coastal protection and ENEC are developing a nuclear facility at Baraka.
They have their classes with a CERT teacher on the Baraka facility which is 50 kilometres from Ruwais, so they were also treated to a tour of the colleges and an opportunity to see all that the HCT in Al Gharbia has to offer those who would like to take their studies further.
The teams were very well matched and throughout the game, both sides showed enormous respect for each other. The soldiers love football and regularly play with the South Koreans who work on the plant.
The RUMC students do not always play together as a team, but all members play regularly for their various companies on the Ruwais petrochemical complex.
It was a close match, but Abdulrahman Aljaberi scored the winning goal in extra time for the RUMC team. The final score was 3-2. It was an exciting match for the spectators, who were treated to some exceptional footwork and a nail biting finish.
The match was followed by a barbecue in the college gardens, where students brought their children to meet the football stars. It was a fitting end to the semester and a chance for the soldiers to feel part of the college.
Their country should be proud of them, they are true professionals, working hard and supporting each other. It is hoped this will be the start to many more matches during the coming year.
