Under the title “The sweat and tireless efforts of ordinary laborers are the force behind the building of our country. We acknowledge your efforts” Fujairah Men’s College Applied Business Information Technology students brainstormed ideas for their community outreach project.
The students decided they wanted to show their appreciation to these workers who contribute so much to the development of the country.
The students contacted three large construction sites around Fujairah and ascertained the numbers of laborers working on these sites. Then they made a list of items that they wanted to put in a gift bag and divided the task of collecting these items among their groups. They were very enthusiastic and were looking forward to meeting the workers to show them that they cared.
During the week of June 3, the students visited the three big construction sites in Fujairah. The laborers stood in lines to meet the students. Students greeted them with respect and gave them the gift bags. They also gave cold drinks and water to the workers. The site’ engineers thanked the students and gave them flowers they had picked from the front garden as a sign of appreciation. One engineer said “Thank you for putting a smile on my workers’ faces”.
Aadel Saif, a student, said: “This small gesture made me feel really good. It is great to show our appreciation to these laborers who work so hard to build our country”.
Another student said “it was very important to show these workers that we cared about them and that they were an important part of our community”.
Suhair Alwahabi, the course instructor, said “Students worked very hard on this project. They divided themselves into groups and allocated the tasks for each group. The first group had to visit the fruit and vegetable market to get fresh fruits. The second group was responsible for ordering 300 Croissants. The third group’s task was to order 300 T-shirts and hats to be given to the workers. As for the fourth group they had to purchase some chips and chocolates from the local supermarket,”Suhair said.
“All the groups had to come up with a logo for the event. The logo was then printed and put on the bus that the students used to tour the sites,”she added.
“The students did an excellent job and it was very rewarding to see how much the workers that we met have for sure enjoyed the students’ brief visit. A great way to end the semester!”
