H.E. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qassimi attends SMC graduation ceremony

His Excellency Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qassimi, Chairman of Sharjah Media Corporation, attended the graduation ceremony of the 2012 class of the Sharjah Men’s College (SMC) on Wednesday, May 23, 2012.

The ceremony was held at Al Tanweer Hall and attended by Dr. Farid Ohan, Director of the Sharjah Higher Colleges of Technology, teaching staff, parents of the graduating students, and a number of dignitaries.

A total of 427 graduates of Sharjah Men`s College completed programs at Bachelor`s Degree, Higher Diploma, and Diploma in Business, IT, and Engineering (including 40 who received degrees with distinction, 8 with high distinction, and 3 with highest distinction).

In his speech to graduates, Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed said: “I am privileged to participate in the celebration of young achievers from Sharjah. This graduation ceremony is the result of the efforts and determination of the students and the faculty.”

“I feel honoured that you have invited me to share this special joy, which marks the beginning of a new journey for each one of you. Moving forward you will have to put in relentless efforts and conquer many more milestones towards realising your ambitions, which will also translate the aspirations of the nation into reality. I want all of you to move forward knowing that the nation looks upon you with pride as the future of the UAE. You hold the knowledge of science, which will go a long way in building the country,” he continued.

“Sharjah has raised its presence on the world map for science and cognitive skills under the visionary guidance of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. The emirate’s scientific and educational achievements offer a testament to its growing culture of inculcating a knowledge-based community.

“It is your responsibility to carry forward Sharjah’s scientific renaissance and keep pace with the scientific and information revolution around the world. Your knowledge is the foundation of our nation’s progress. We count on you to enrich our technical programmes in line with rapid global changes. Your effort will enable us to keep abreast of industrial development.

“Young people, with their creativity and ambition, are the drivers of change and the basis of development. We look up to them with hope as the force for building a bright future on the strength of their knowledge. It is on them to draw upon their constructive capacities and skills to serve the nation and participate in its progress.

“Today, you stand at a very crucial turning point in life – during the short interval between the transition from student life to taking on professional roles – you will take some decisions that will define your future. You will pick a path that will translate your aspirations into reality and set goals to serve your country and community.

“I wish you all success and I am confident that each of you will take decisions that will allow the leaders of today to trust the future of the UAE in your hands.”

In his welcome speech, Dr. Farid Ohan, Director of the Sharjah Higher Colleges of Technology, thanked H.E. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed for gracing the graduation ceremony and for his continued support to the college.

He also expressed his appreciation for parents who have provided continuous guidance, care and support for their sons and daughters. He then congratulated all the graduates, who have made their families and country very proud, wishing them every success as they pursue future career options.

Following the speeches, H.E. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed, accompanied by Dr. Farid, handed the graduates their certificates and distributed a number of awards to graduates for their academic and sporting excellence as well as outstanding community contributions. Then a memorial gift was presented to H.E. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed.

Student Valedictorian Khalfan Hassan Al Matrooshi, Business graduate and former Student Council president, delivered a speech, on behalf of the graduates, in which he welcomed H.E. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed and the audience, then turned his address to the teachers.

“I would like to thank our dear teachers. Through our educational journey at the Sharjah Higher Colleges of Technology, from Foundations and all the way to our last semester, you have patiently taught us English, Maths, Physics, Economics, Accounting, Programming, data base management, etc. You have given up your private time to accompany us on trips, leadership camps and competitions. It has not always been easy yet you have never given up on us, always motivating and guide us,” he said.

At the end of the ceremony, the audience was entertained by a number of poems recited by Obaid Al Yalyali, Engineering graduate and college poet. Then they enjoyed watching a cultural entertainment show.
