Students from the HCT’s ADWC undertake Work Placements as a graduation requirement.

Over 450 senior students from the Higher Colleges of Technology’s Abu Dhabi Women’s College are set to begin eight weeks of required work experience with employers around the emirate.

The HCT’s mandatory Work Placement program gives final-year students a head start toward employment by allowing them to practice their skills in a real-world environment.

The program, which includes assistance from both a faculty supervisor and an in-company mentor, is designed to develop HCT graduate outcomes such as teamwork, critical thinking, independent learning, and vocational competency.

This year’s batch of interns will work in private and public entities, doing tasks such as designing product logos, developing software systems, creating e-newsletters, and working on marketing strategies. Although student-interns are not paid, their placement gives them valuable experience and networking opportunities. The employer is expected to complete an evaluation of each intern at the end of the Work Placement.

Students find their time away from the College both challenging and rewarding. Wadha, one returning Work Placement student, said: “Eight weeks is a long time! My communication skills really improved though my placement. About a week before the end, my team and I were asked to do a presentation for senior management. That turned out to be a great experience.”

Dr. Jace Hargis, ADWC’s Director, encouraged the departing students, saying; “Working in an established organization gives our students a chance to show their professional skills and work ethic in real working conditions. It is my hope that the students who are starting their Work Placements this week will give their utmost effort and return to the College with a renewed determination to do what it takes to succeed in the workplace.”
