The talented SMC quiz team during the competition.
Not even heavy rain and flooded roads could stop the Sharjah Men’s College quiz team, and a group of keen supporters, travelling to Al Ain on March 2 to seek victory in the much-anticipated HCT Foundations Quiz.
The quiz is a yearly event in which contestants from each college compete in seven different areas including the UAE, geography, spelling and vocabulary, grammar, maths and general knowledge.
The SMC Quiz Team proved they were true champions, returning with the HD Foundations Quiz Competition Trophy. The SMC “dream team” of Abdulla Mohamed Ali Abdulla Al Safi, Abdulaziz Mohamed Hassan Mohamed Al Mehza, Abdelaziz Ahmed Abdelaziz Jasim Abdalla Kashwani, Mohamed Hamad Fahad Ali Shuhail and Mohamed Omar Ali Mohamed Al Attar, competed against five teams from Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Fujairah and RAK.
The team, along with their coach Nicole Bishay and Mokhtar Bourchak, braved the rain and flooded roads to make the journey.
Throughout the seven rounds, Sharjah’s superstars and their supporters showed excellent sportsmanship. Vocabulary and spelling, Round 6, was the choice for the SMC’s Joker round, in which all points are doubled. By the end of Round 6, SMC was in the lead by 12 points. In Round 7, the team sailed to victory with a final score of 126, nine points ahead of the runners up, Al Ain.
With outstanding performances in all 7 quiz rounds the team graciously accepted the champion’s trophy.
After the tournament Al Ain Associate Director Tim Smith commented on how well-rounded the SMC team was. The students made quite an impression in Al Ain, and staff, faculty and fellow students are all very proud of them in Sharjah.
During a recent Thursday Foundations’ Assembly, SMC Director Dr. Farid Ohan congratulated the team with first place medals and certificates.
Congratulations to the team!
